LOCATION: Borrowdale, Lake District 21st to 23rd May 2021. Snowdonia 20th to 22nd August 2021.

This three day course aims to provide new and novice walkers with a solid foundation of knowledge that will allow them to make the informed decisions required in order to enjoy walks and adventures in the upland hill & mountain environments.

Subjects we will cover will include preparing for a day on the mountains, interpreting weather forecasts, choosing a suitable route, selecting appropriate equipment and clothing, an introduction to map reading and navigation, emergency procedures and how to organise a rescue before heading out into the hills to introduce practical skills. We will hold a route planning & preparation session for our upcoming 2 day 'mini exped & wild camp'.

This course will see us set out on a 'mini expedition' with a full day journeying into the upper environments of our mountain area. We will look at employing a navigational strategy, demonstrate & practice navigational skills in a 'real' scenario as we progress on our route. We will  discuss camp craft, associated responsibilities and restrictions, as part of our choosing a suitable site for our overnight wild camp. After making camp we will (non-compulsory) head out after sunset for a night navigation exercise , which will introduce the skills required to navigate in conditions of poor visibility. We will spend a finall day completing our 'exped' by practicing the new skills gained whilst we journey through the mountains.

(Please note: adverse weather conditions may affect proposed itinerary)

REQUIREMENTS: This course involves 3 days of outdoor practical skills explanation, demonstration and client implementation. Those attending should have an adequate level of fitness needed for 3 full days walking in mountainous terrain, with the addition of a wild camp. Appropriate clothing and equipment for the conditions will be required to gain the most from the course. No previous navigational knowledge is required but may be of benefit.

Those attending should be in possession of all items listed on kit list (which will be sent out with information pack on booking).

INCLUDED: Leadership, instruction, planning, organisation by fully qualified and experienced Mountain Leader/ Course Instructor.
