This course is based on our full day 'Introduction To Map Skills' Countryside course, though is held in a semi rural locations over 4 to 5 hours.

This course is designed for new and novice countryside and hill walkers, as well as those with some experience looking to consolidate any existing knowledge. During the course you will be introduced to the fundamental map skills required to navigate competently on 'Rights Of Way' in the outdoors and countryside on which all further knowledge, skills and techniques can be built upon.

Skills and techniques that will be covered include making a route selection and planning, appropriate equipment, emergency procedures, map scale and map symbols, understanding grid references, how to orientate the map, recognising physical landscape features from the map, and creating and employing a navigation strategy.

SUITABILITY: This course is suitable for those interested in gaining the navigational knowledge that may allow them to undertake their own 'on path' routes in the outdoor environments, without need of following a guide book and with confidence in their ability. No previous navigational knowledge is required but may be of benefit.

REQUIREMENTS: This course involves one-day of outdoor practical skills explanation, demonstration and client implementation. Those attending should have an adequate level of fitness needed for a full day of walking in an outdoor semi rural environment, to gain most from the course.

Those attending should be in possession of all items listed on kit list (which will be sent out with information on booking). 

INCLUDED: Course leadership, planning, organisation and instruction by fully qualified and experienced mountain leader/course instructor. 

NOT INCLUDED: Travel, accommodation, any other expenses such as parking fees, etc. 

PLEASE NOTE: We recommend taking out travel, personal accident and cancellation insurance.
