LOCATION: 24th - 26th May 2021 (Borrowdale, Lake District) and 5th - 7th August 2021 (Snowdonia)

This 3 day course is designed for new and novice hill walkers, as well as those having previous 'on path' experience who are interested in gaining the navigational knowledge, skills and confidence that may allow them to plan independent routes 'on & off path' through remote, upland & mountainous environments.

The course will involve introduction, demonstration, explanation and practice of skills and techniques on and off path and over terrain appropriate to course subject being taught. Navigation skills covered will include - 

  • Considering appropriate clothing and equipment for the environment and conditions.
  • Emergency equipment & procedures.
  • considerations of making a suitable route selection.
  • Introduction to available maps from various publishers.
  • Understanding map scales & symbols.
  • Understanding grid references.
  • Access & Rights Of Way.
  • Considerations of making a suitable route selection.
  • How to set the map.
  • Measure distance on the map and estimate time of a route.
  • Using a navigational strategy.
  • Estimate distance on the ground using pacing & timing.
  • Using linear 'handrail' features during a journey.
  • Confirm location using identifiable features.
  • Interpreting contour lines on the map and relate to landscape features on the ground.
  • Identifying 're entrants', 'spurs', 'ridges' and prominent landscape features on the map.
  • Using the compass to take and follow a bearing.  relocation techniques and more.
  • Be able to recognise a navigational error within a short period.
  • Understand and utilise various relocation techniques as appropriate.
  • Use of 'macro' and 'micro' navigation techniques when appropriate.
  • Navigate efficiently over 'off path' terrain.
  • Navigation in poor visibility conditions or in darkness.

SUITABILITY: This course is suitable for anyone new to hill or mountain walking with no or little previous navigational knowledge, anyone having had previous experience of following 'on path' routes wanting to plan & follow their own 'off path' routes, and anyone looking to refresh and consolidate any existing knowledge.

REQUIREMENTS: This course involves 3 days of outdoor practical skills explanation, demonstration and client implementation. Those attending should have an adequate level of fitness required for 3 full days of hill and mountain walking, including over 'off path' terrain.

Those attending should be in possession of all items listed on kit list (which will be sent out with information pack on booking). 

INCLUDED: Course leadership, planning, organisation and instruction by fully qualified and experienced mountain leader/course instructor. 

NOT INCLUDED: Travel, accommodation, any other expenses such as parking fees etc. 

PLEASE NOTE: We recommend taking out travel, personal accident and cancellation insurance.
